Burberry

For its Fall/Winter 2017-18 collection, the Burberry House once again pays tribute to British style at its most beautiful. Inspired by the work of photographers such as Janette Beckman, Daniel Meadows or Jane Brown, who specialize in social portraiture, the label offered the image of a diverse, eclectic England. Tartan, star of the show, is used on clothing and on accessories, covering Burberry shoes, as well as Burberry bags. Totes and the Washbag, the brand’s new design inspired by a small toiletry bag, have also been dressed up in tartan.

In 1856, Thomas Burberry, then a young store apprentice, founded the Burberry House. His core business? Coats, which he tried to perfect to offer his customers comfort and protection. In 1879, the British designer started inventing and developed gabardine, a breathable and waterproof fabric. The brand became increasingly renowned and in 1912, invented and patented the trench coat, which was reserved to military officers at the time. As it was light and practical, the overcoat soon became British soldiers’ uniform. Throughout the twentieth century, the English label continued to dress explorers, such as Sir Ernest Shackleton and aviator Betty Kirby-Green. Since then, the Burberry brand has diversified, strengthening its lines of handbags, designer shoes and men and women’s ready-to-wear.

When he joined Burberry in 2001, Christopher Bailey was far from being a beginner. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in 1994, the British fashion designer worked at Donna Karan for two years, then at Gucci, alongside Tom Ford. His main asset is his global vision. Under his leadership, the English label gained visibility and became one of the first to embrace the digital age and its various tools. Christopher Bailey was also one of the first designers to apply the See Now, Buy Now model, which involves presenting collections in keeping with seasonality. A British Fashion Awards favorite, the British designer was named Menswear Designer of the Year in 2007, 2008 and 2013, as well as Designer of the Year in 2009.
